Art from the heart of Bihar

Our Mission

Mithila Crafts was born from a deep respect for the artistic traditions of the Mithila region in Bihar, India. Our mission is simple yet profound: to preserve and promote the ancient art forms of Mithila while creating sustainable livelihoods for the artisan communities who have kept these traditions alive for centuries.

We work directly with artisan families in Madhubani, Darbhanga, Muzaffarpur, and surrounding districts, ensuring fair prices and dignified working conditions. By connecting these talented artists with a global audience, we help ensure that their art form continues to thrive for generations to come.

Madhubani art tradition

The Art of Mithila

Madhubani painting, also known as Mithila painting, is an ancient art form that originated in the Mithila region of Bihar. Traditionally practised by women, these paintings were created on freshly plastered mud walls of homes during festivals, religious events, and weddings.

The art is characterised by intricate geometric patterns, vibrant colours derived from natural sources, and subjects drawn from nature, mythology, and daily life. Common motifs include fish (symbolising fertility), lotus flowers (purity), peacocks (love), and scenes from Hindu epics.

Today, this GI-tagged art form has evolved from wall paintings to canvas, paper, silk, and various other mediums while retaining its distinctive character and cultural significance.

Skill Development: We organise workshops where master artisans mentor younger generations, ensuring the continuity of traditional techniques while exploring new mediums.

Women's Empowerment: Over 70% of our artisans are women, many of whom are now primary earners in their families, gaining financial independence through their art.
